Odisha Textile & Tribal Tour – Explore authentic weaving & tribal villages

The tour is a combination of beautiful textiles of odisha with a week visit to the tribal destinations of odisha. First we shall visit some of the famous workshops and understand the techniques of weaving, natural printing and dyeing.

The tour starts with a visit to the ancient monuments of Bhubaneswar. Later will we move towards North Odisha to visit various villages practicing the old techniques of weaving and natural dyeing.

Then we will move towards south of odisha to see the beautiful tribes of odisha. We shall visit the villages , see the daily life, learn about various handicrafts and also get to see authentic textile used by the tribes.

Day 1: BHUBANESWAR

Arrival at airport / railway station . Our representative receives you and transfer you to the hotel.

Day 2: BHUBANESWAR – NUAPATNA – SADEIBARENI – DHENKANAL

A drive to Nuapatna textile village known for it Double Ikat technique. We stop at one of the workshops to learn the process of this very old and complicated technique. Later we move on to Dhenkanal and stop by at Sadeibareni a small village known for it Dhokra Craft. The evening will be spent with the Sadhus of the Joranda Ashram. The evening rituals are noteworthy here. The night will be spent in a beautiful heritage palace of Dhenkanal.

Day 3: DHENKANAL - SAMBALPUR

After a quick breakfast we will be driving towards North Odisha. Sambulpur textiles are known all over India for its interesting and Unique Print. Sambulpuri sarees find their places in the wardrobes of most Indian women. The sarees are a symbol of elegance . We will also make a quick stop to see the peculiar leaning temple of Huma . Overnight in a hotel.

Day 4: SAMBALPUR - BARPALI - BARGADH - BOLANGIR

Today we drive towards Bolangir and make stops at Barpalli and Bargadh to see the famous techniques of Tusser Silk Weaving . Overnight in a hotel.

Day 5: BOLANGIR - SAGARPALI - SONEPUR - BOLANGIR

After breakfast we will do an excursion to Sagarpalli and Sonepur places very famous their natural Dyeing methods and very beautiful Design prints. Return back to Bolangir. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 6: BOLANGIR - PUSHANGIA

After seeing the beautiful and interesting textiles of Odisha , it is time to explore the beauty of South Odisha . The place is known for its beautiful landscape and the friendly tribes that live here. Today we will be driving to Pushangia , a small responsible tourism initiative started by our agency to support the Maliah Kondhs of the regions. The Maliahs are a sub group of the Kondh tribes that used to practise human sacrifice in the past. Human sacrifice has obviously stopped but it has been replaced by a small chicken or a pig to please the mother goddess for good crops.

Day 7: PUSHANGIA

The day will be spent to explore the villages of the Maliah Kondhs. The Maliah women are known for the tattoos that they adorn on the face , it resembles the whiskers of a tiger. Anthropologists believe , the practised this to confuse the witch doctor who according to them would transform them into big cats in the night. The villages are extremely beautiful and the people are also Friendly. Return back to Camp to experience some authentic tribal food. Overnight in Pushangia Eco Huts.

Day 8: PUSHANGIA - CHATIKONA MARKET - JEYPORE

We drive further towards South Odisha , and stop by at the colourful weekly market at Chatikkona . The market is fixed on Wednesdays only. You will come across the Dongoriyas ( also referred to as the hill people ) and the Desia Kondhs coming to this markets to sell local products. A kind of barter system still exists today . The dongoriyas have a beautiful and one of a kind textile Shawl which they weave on their own . The colors are vibrant and the textile is Unique. Later we move on to visit the villages of the Kuvi Kondhs and Mali who are horticulturists by profession. Overnight in a hotel.

Day 9: JEYPORE - ONKUDELLI MARKET - JEYPORE

Today we drive 75 kms to Onkudelli , the colorful and vibrant market that occurs only on Thursday Mornings. Here you can find the Bondas and the Gadabbas who walk almost 25kms from their villages early in the morning to sell local products like fruits , vegetables and a very strong alcohol which they prepare. Return back to jeypore , with a picnic lunch on the way. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 10: JEYPORE - KUNDULI MARKET - RAYAGADA

Today we drive for 60kms to Kunduli one of the largest markets of local spices and vegetables South Odisha . Here we can meet the Paroja Tribes , one of the largest ethnic groups in Odisha. Later we will drive to Peta to meet the Kumbhars who are known to make utensils of Clay. Return back to Jeypore. Overnight in Hotel.

Day 11: RAYAGADA - JIRANG - GOPALPUR

Today we drive towards Gopalpur on Sea. We make a stop at the peaceful Tibetan Monastery at Jirang. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 12: GOPALPUR - MANGALAJODI - PURI

After breakfast drive to the holy city of Puri. We enjoy a boat ride in the back waters of Chilika to see rare migratory birds. Later drive towards Puri . free at Beach . Overnight at Hotel.

Day 13: PURI - KONARK - PURI

Morning after breakfast we make an excursion to the famous sun temple at Konark . We also visit the little fishermen villages near the beach . In the evening enjoy a rickshaw ride in the famous Grand Road Of Puri. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 14: DEPARTURE

Drive to Bhubaneswar to catch flight / train in time

  • You have to make sure that you carry your passport, Visa and Photo ID cards on the tour
  • Know about the route maps or carry one along and also learn about the transport facilities available so that these things might come in handy. Learn about the vegetation and the diseases causing insects and the remedial measures.
  • Respect the tribal people’s sentiments and culture.
  • Photography is permitted in tribal areas , however we ask our guests to take permission of the people before they start clicking pictures.
  • Make sure to wear clothes as per the climate so that you will protect yourself from the weather changes.
  • Learn some words of greetings, thank you and others in the tribal language that could help you in the interaction.
  • Special permissions are required to enter the village, make sure that you have the necessary permits.
  • If you are a foreign visitor then learn about the Indian currency as that is the only mode of transaction in the place.
  • It’s advisable to take a travel insurance as you will be traveling and exploring the isolated places.
